Renegades Review

Renegades By Marissa Meyer

Review by Antares

Renegades is an amazing book, no doubt about it. There are countless things I love about it, but the top is and always will be Nova Artino. The setting and the pace of the story is wonderful, I think this is one of the best ways a story explained its universe. The writing was strong yet simple. And the change in point of views is also one of the best things. To know what the other doesn't.

[SPOILERS]

I will rant a lot about Nova, so prepare yourself.
Nova Artino is an Anarchist. The Super Villain league led by Ace Anarchy until he died. The surviving Anarchists went into hiding. At first I didn't think I'd like Nova because you usually see villains killing off innocent people, but Nova had other views. And, honestly, I was on her side the whole time. She always had a fair argument.

"Heroism wasn’t about what you could do, it was about what you did."

She wasn't a fan of the Renegades, obviously, and they weren't liking her either. They underestimated her a lot, except for Adrian AKA Sketch.

Anyway, further into the book things got complicated and knowing what goes on in both their heads I couldn't put the book down. With the heros and the villains, the lies and the disguises. I could predict a chaotic ending. And not to forget the fun emotions running through both Nova and Adrian.

"It was attraction, pure and simple. It was hormones. It was… biology."

Did I mention I love Nova?

I really want to read the second book, but I have to write this review first. Now, although people may argue that she was a villain and would've probably killed the Captain, you're forgetting she didn't have rainbows and daisies in her childhood. She didn't have the right people to be with her as she grew. Nova spoke fondly of her Uncle and sometimes I would agree with Ace's view but like Adrian said, there could've been better ways to bring freedom to the prodigies.

There aren't any characters in this book I dislike, except for Frostbite, everyone's story and position in the story seems remarkable.

Now another reason I like Nova is because she isn't your typical villain, in fact, I wouldn't even classify her as evil.

"You don’t need to be a Renegade to be a superhero."

She hated the Renegades with personal reasons. And she directed more of her hate towards the council. Her development wasn't at the fullest, in fact, I think it was minimal but it was reasonable. Nonetheless, I hope to see more development in the next books. I really hope they don't disappoint me.

Last but not least, the ending. The ending didn't seem like an ending, rather the starting of the story (I love it). It was as if the first chapter of the future Galton History Textbooks. Chaos and adventures to be awaited for. It makes you wonder what Nova will do next, what the Renegades will do, what the Anarchists will do? It makes you want to continue to the next book Archenemies

Marissa did a splendid job in this book and I hope to be just as delighted, if not more, in Archenemies.
